What Is Psychoacoustics?

The human brain works by focusing its attention. When we concentrate on something—a sound, an image or a smell—it is as if we isolate other stimuli, making them seem less intense and more distant. This is an automatic, unconscious process, similar to what happens when we hear an annoying noise that we would like to ignore. Think, for example, of the ticking of a clock in a room when we are trying to fall asleep and simply cannot stop hearing it.

Why does this happen?

When the human brain focuses on something, it directs its full attention towards it, amplifying its perceived intensity.

Sound insulation is a highly complex field and often has to take individual sensitivities into account. As a result, psychological factors can play a significant role in how the outcome is perceived.

In some cases, even after sound insulation work has been carried out successfully and the expected results have been achieved, the person concerned may insist that nothing has changed and that they still experience the same discomfort.

In this particular situation, their attention is so intensely focused on detecting any residual noise that they eventually manage to pick it up, even when it is barely perceptible in reality.

All of this helps us understand why, after sound insulation work has been completed, the wisest approach is often to focus on the improvements and trust that the problem has been resolved. In this way, the mind can gradually shift its attention towards the quiet, filtering out any minimal residual noise.
